The Key-Up Challenge
Test who actually knows how to use their kit. And who clips their first three words because they did not wait a beat.
The Setup 1 Min
Get everyone to grab their two-way or hold up an imaginary one. Remind them of the core Dirty Roger rule. Push to talk. Key up wait a beat then speak.
Tell them you are throwing out a rapid-fire site scenario. Point to someone in the circle and they have exactly 3 seconds to key up and make the call to the crew using perfect etiquette.
The Rules 30 Sec
The crew is the judge. They yell CLIPPED or BOGGED if the caller makes any rookie mistake.
- Speaking before the radio connects. Forgetting to wait a beat.
- Yelling into the mic instead of talking clearly.
- Rambling without thinking about the call first.
The Scenarios 3 Min
Run through these pointing to different crew members to make the call on the fly.
- Light vehicle. A massive emu just ran out and blocked the haul road right in front of a dump truck. Call it in.
- Radio in the sink. You dropped your two-way in the crib room sink. Good thing it is IP67. Test if it still transmits clearly to the supervisor. Call it in.
- Gloves on and bogged. Thick gloves and you hit the big button but you are bogged to the axles out the back of the plant. Call it in.
- Joke round. Ten minutes to end of shift you are starving and you need to know if there are any pies left in the pie warmer before you walk back. Call it in.
The Wrap-Up 30 Sec
Give a shoutout to the person who made the cleanest sharpest call. Close it out by tapping the radio and echoing the brand.
These things are built like hell and made to talk. Treat them right think before you press and wait a beat. Stay safe out there.
